Information 4.0: The Challenge of Autonomous Machines
Ray Gallon
In this presentation, we explore the ideas behind Information 4.0 – most especially, information molecularity – and how they might fit into a world where many decisions will be made in machine code that is unreadable to humans, through deep learning processes that are hidden from us except at input and output stages. How will humans and machines collaborate in future hybrid communities? What ethical and epistemological questions are raised? How do we add value through our expertise? We’ll survey possibilities, answer some questions, and end up with a lot more new ones to ponder. […]
Empathy by the Numbers—Creating High-Value Design Solutions Through Systematic Empathy
Umit Gokce
Understanding human empathy is a competitive advantage that creates opportunities. By consistently recognizing and following the feelings of people we have never met—and incorporating those feelings into our work—we connect more quickly, deeply, and authentically with the people we design for. As designers, our goal with every project is to measurably determine our users’ significant problems and design solutions that will create the greatest value. But can we solve problems for users by applying empathy sustainably and systematically? Yes, we can. […]

Modern Frankenstein: designing kind machines
Clementina Gentile
We created complex systems that run critical infrastructure and we are torn between the trust in their supposedly selfless and perfectly logical processes and the fear that their obscure and unreadable algorithms will take over. This talk reflects upon the role of designers in managing these fears and expectations in the most ethical and human way by addressing three critical aspects: Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency. […]
Chatbot development asks for new ways to involve end-users to secure great customer experience
Loba van Heugten
The emphasis will be on presenting the design research done before launch of the chatbot: 2 studies – gorilla studies 5 studies – formal think aloud studies 3 studies – chatbot training sessions Total of 64 members have been involved. The aim of this presentation is to inspire how end-users can be involved in the development of chatbots and why finalizing the overall interface calls for several different methodologies. […]

The design of ethical algorithms in autonomous machines
Sławomir Molenda
Self-driving cars, digital companions, domestic robots and even AI-powered sex automatons will share the physical world with us very soon. It will have far-reaching consequences for our societies. If we hope to live safely with autonomous machines, they can’t be a threat to us, and they certainly must comply with ethical requirements. […]
Surgical UX: Information design for visualisation systems in surgery
Tim Caynes
Advances in digital technologies have enhanced the capabilities of surgical practitioners in significant ways. With each advance, the relationship between human operators and digital assistants becomes ever more inter-dependent and intertwined. […]
